Aspects ultrastructuraux de la biodegradation de l''ancienne cuticule de Carcinus maenas durant la periode preecdysiale ArchiMer
Thorez, A; Compere, P; Goffinet, G.
Ultrastructural observations of various integumental regions of the crab Carcinus maenas show an important biodegradation of the old sclerites during premolt. At the ecdysis, this biodegradation extends from the basis of the membranous layer up the upper third of the principal layer. The first biodegradation features are a disorganization followed by a complete disappearance of the microfibrils. Numerous ecdysial droplets and double membrane bounded microstructures probably take part in biodegradation processes.

Caracterización y cronología del exoesqueleto en la centolla Lithodes santolla (Crustacea, Lithodidae) del Golfo San Jorge, Argentina. OceanDocs
Di Marco, E.J..
Southern king crab Lithodes santolla specimens were captured during INIDEP research cruises in the San Jorge Gulf (45 degree -47' S, 64 degree -68' W), Argentine Sea, in March, April, July and August 2001 and August 2002. In order to determine qualitative and quantitative characters related to the shell ageing, a macroscopic examination of specimens was performed. The main considered characters were: shell hardness, ventral shell coloration, necrosis development, merus meat content, kind of epibionts, abrasions length on coxa and maximum size of ventral necrosis. A hierarchical grouping from the qualitative characters was elaborated and associations among these characters were established. Thus, a key to discriminate the specimens in different groups was...

Effets de l'ablation des pedoncules oculaires, au cours des stades Zoe 3 et Zoe 4 sur la mue de la metamorphose de Palaemonetes varians (Leach) (Crustacea, Decapoda) ArchiMer
Leroux, Aurelien.
The presence of two (or at least one) eyestalks is required for inducing a complete, monoecdysial metamorphosis in Palaemonetes varians . This induction is performed, at 20 degree C, in about 20 hours situated on either side of the third larval moult when metamorphosis occurs at the fourth one. The mechanism of induction is discussed.

Growth And Moulting Of Captive Panulirus Homarus Homarus In Kenya, Western Indian Ocean. OceanDocs
Mavuti, K.M.; Kulmiye, A.J..
Panulirus homarus homarus is the most widely distributed among the three P. homarus subspecies and is the second most important spiny lobster in the Kenyan lobster fishery after P. ornatus. Growth and moulting of lobsters, held in concrete tanks with a flow-through seawater supply and at ambient temperatures, were monitored for 18 months (October, 2001 - March, 2003). Both moult increment and moulting frequency were inversely correlated with size. Mean moult increment ranged from 4mm in the 36-45 mm CL size class to 0.6 mm in the 86-95 mm CL size class. Mean intermoult period increased from 49 days in the 46-55 mm CL size class to 81 days in the 86-95 mm CL size class. Growth rates were 19% and 46% higher for males and females, respectively during the...

La neuroendocrinologie des crustaces: Evaluation des progres obtenus ces dernieres annees ArchiMer
Vanherp, F.
Particular attention is given to the crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH), to the gonad inhibiting (GIH) and stimulating hormone (GSH), to the moult inhibiting hormone (MIH) and to the peptidergic factors related to some hormones from vertebrates and insects. The interactions of these factors as well as the coordination with biogenic amines and steroids in the control of the metabolism, reproduction and moulting are postulated.

Metal and metalloid bioaccumulation in the Pacific blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris (Stimpson) from New Caledonia: Laboratory and field studies ArchiMer
Metian, Marc; Hedouin, Laetitia; Eltayeb, Mohamed M.; Lacoue-labarthe, Thomas; Teyssie, Jean-louis; Mugnier, Chantal; Bustamante, Paco; Warnau, Michel.
The present work aimed at better understanding metal and metalloid bioaccumulation in the edible Pacific blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris, using both laboratory and field approaches. In the laboratory, the bioaccumulation kinetics of Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, and Zn have been investigated in shrimp exposed via seawater and food, using the corresponding gamma-emitting radiotracers (Ag-110m, Cd-109, Co-57, Cr-51, and Zn-65) and highly sensitive nuclear detection techniques. Results showed that hepatopancreas and intestine concentrated the metals to the highest extent among the blue shrimp organs and tissues. Moulting was found to play a non negligible detoxification role for Co, Cr and, to a lesser extent, Zn. Metal retention by L stylirostris widely varied (from...

Microanatomical characteristics of marginal ommatidia in three different size-classes of the semi-terrestrial isopod Ligia exotica (Crustacea; Isopoda) Biocell
Keskinen,Essi; Takaku,Yasuharu; Meyer-Rochow,Benno; Hariyama,Takahiko.
The aims of this paper have been (a) to characterize marginal ommatidia from different eyeregions through a detailed description of their distinct ultrastructural features in three different size-classes ofL. exotica, and (b) to compare microanatomical characteristics of the marginal ommatidia with those of ommatidia of the same eye, but located further centrally. On the basis of transverse as well as longitudinal sections we conclude that new ommatidia are added from a crescentic dorso-anterio-ventral edge of the eye and that maturing ommatidia go through a sequence in which originally the nuclei of cone -, pigment-, and retinula cells are arranged in three separate layers. At the beginning of the microvillar development, the organization of the...

Mineral requirement of Penaeids ArchiMer
Piedad-pascual, F.
Marine shrimps absorb minerals from their aquatic environment aside from the minerals that come from the food they eat. Thus, the dietary requirement of shrimps for certain minerals will depend on the amounts and availability of these minerals in the aquatic environment. Dietary sources for growth may be necessary due to losses during moltings.

Moulting-hormone activity in adult Artemia OMA
Van Beek, E.; Criel, G.R.J.; Walgraeve, H.; De Loof, A..
The Artemia strain from Great Salt Lake (GSL 375) was used. Total body extracts and hemolymph of Artemia were purified by solvent partition and column chromatography. Moulting-hormone concentrations were then determined by a specific radioimmunoassay (RIA). Results are expressed in ng ecdysteroid activity/g fresh weight (or per ml). Initially, the RIA data on extracts of adults were highly variable. The use of a more accurate sampling technique based on the reproductive cycle of the females allowed to determine a hormone activity pattern. In females, moulting cycles alternate with vitellogenic cycles. The lowest values of ecdysone (3-6 ng ecdysone equivalents/g fresh body weight or ml hemolymph) occur during...

Reproductive performance of Macrobrachium rosenbergii females in captivity OMA
Cavalli, R.O.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The breeding frequency, fecundity, egg hatchability, larval output and viability of pond-reared, mature Macrobrachium rosenbergii females were individually followed up during 180 d. Sexually mature prawns were maintained under controlled laboratory conditions (28.7 C and 12-h light/d) in a 190-L freshwater recirculation system and fed a formulated diet. Ovarian development, moulting and spawning events were checked daily. At least six consecutive moults were recorded for each of the 18 females. The duration of the intermoult period averaged 27.5 d and was not affected by ovarian development or spawning, but intermoult periods followed by spawning had significantly lower growth rates. From a total of 126 moulting events recorded, egg...
